Danish design duo Ernst / Bartholin Jensen join the Cozmo stable with their Re:Lounge chair, a new iteration of a stackable lounge chair designed more than 20 years ago
Direct-to-consumer furniture brand Cozmo and Danish design duo Anne-Mette Bartholin Jensen and Morten Ernst present Re:Lounge, a reworked version of a stackable lounge chair that the pair originally developed more two decades ago.
The new design is based on the Ginko Chair, which the pair first created for Weber Furniture. Cozmo’s co-founder Jacob Peres first connected with the designers at 3 Days of Design in 2024 and immediately saw the chair’s potential.
“Aesthetically, I loved how it managed to feel both lightweight and sculptural. There was this beautiful economy of material – the slender triangular base, the thin folding seat, the way the upholstery sat tight over the frame. It was clever, almost architectural in its simplicity. It was also designed to be flat-packed, with the curve – and the comfort – coming entirely from the way the material bends within the supporting leg structure,” says Peres.
Cozmo – known for its digital-first approach, modular systems and user-focused design – invited Ernst and Bartholin Jensen to revisit the chair and reinterpret it for a new audience. The result is an updated design with improved construction, a simplified flat-pack frame and a reworked seat and cover designed for comfort, durability, flexibility and ease of assembly.
“The updated lounge chair consists of a single thin sheet, proportioned and shaped so it can be folded by hand and secured to a simple steel frame. This forms an enveloping seat and backrest, complemented by a detachable cushion that adds comfort, colour and tactility,” explain the Copenhagen-based designers.
“The idea of transforming a sheet material into a three-dimensional form has been a recurring interest in our practice. We explore how the inherent properties and spatial potential of flat materials could be pushed in new directions.”
Full-scale modelling and prototyping have been central to this process, enabling Ernst and Bartholin Jensen to experiment with folding, joining and the interplay between structural elements. “The Re:Lounge is defined by two primary structural components that are entirely interdependent, shaping its overall form, ensuring comfort, and enabling the piece to be folded and assembled with ease,” they continue.
The result is a shapely and inviting chair that nods to mid-century Danish design but is simple to customise and assemble. “We’re currently developing two versions of the main seat – one in polypropylene sheet and another in moulded plywood,” explains Peres. “The customisation comes through a removable pad that sits neatly on top, available in a variety of fabrics and colours, allowing the look and feel to be easily changed.”
The Re:Lounge chair made its debut at 3 Days of Design in June and will be available via myCozmo.com later this year.
Cozmo is also taking part in this year’s Shoreditch Design Triangle, showcasing their latest products within the Wax Building. Find out more here.
