Japanese furniture brand Stellar Works has launched two new collections with Toronto-based interior designer Alessandro Munge
The first, Marea, reflects the brand’s commitment to refined craftsmanship and thoughtful design, comprising a series of dining chairs, a lounge chair and ottoman, and a collection of tables. We speak to Alessandro Munge, founder and principal of Studio Munge, about the collaboration.

OO: What traditional methods did you look to and what innovations did you implement? Or did you tap into Stellar Works’ craftsmanship?
Alessandro Munge: From the beginning, we wanted Marea to express a sense of craftsmanship that feels timeless, while responding to the technical requirements of contemporary furniture. The design is rooted in traditional woodworking principles such as clarity of structure, honest construction and carefully balanced proportions. Rather than relying on decorative gestures, the focus was on creating a frame that feels light yet grounded, where each element has a clear purpose. Subtle shaping is used only where necessary, particularly in the backrest, to enhance comfort and visual softness without compromising structural integrity.
These traditional ideas were refined through modern manufacturing techniques, engineering and structural testing to ensure consistency, durability and suitability for contract environments. Stellar Works’ craftsmanship was fundamental throughout the process. Their expertise in timber construction, detailing and finishing played a key role in translating the design intent into a collection that balances elegance with performance.

OO: What timber is used for the Marea pieces and why?
AM: The Marea collection is crafted primarily in solid ash wood. Ash is valued for its strength, stability, and refined grain, allowing the collection to maintain elegant proportions while meeting the durability requirements of hospitality and commercial environments. Its natural texture and versatility across finishes also support the adaptability of the collection across residential and contract settings.

OO: How do your Italian heritage and time spent in Canada play into your design work?
AM: Although I grew up in Canada, I travelled often to Italy to visit family, which gave me the opportunity to be exposed to exceptional architecture, furniture, craftsmanship and design culture. These experiences shaped my sensitivity to proportion, materiality and detail. At the same time, living and working in Canada reinforced the importance of functionality, durability and clarity of use. My approach to design today sits between these two worlds. Marea reflects that balance, combining emotional warmth with technical precision.

OO: Tell us about your experience collaborating with Stellar Works?
AM: The name Marea, meaning tide in Italian, reflects the sense of movement and rhythm that inspired the collection. It references the traditional ‘trabocchi’ structures found along Italy’s Adriatic coastline, where wooden frameworks extend over the sea, appearing light yet structurally grounded. That idea of suspension and balance became central to the design language. Collaborating with Stellar Works was a natural and highly collaborative experience. Their openness to narrative-driven design and their strong technical expertise allowed the collection to evolve seamlessly from concept to production.
