Circular design studio No Smoking The Future has launched a new interior lighting collection made from organic and waste materials.
Continually pushing boundaries with its circular approach to design, Italian design studio No Smoking The Future has launched a new lighting collection titled ‘Thank You Plastic’. While alluding to the form, simplicity and vibrant colours of plastic, the mission behind this launch is to highlight the environmental impact of such polymers while also putting forward a series of designs created with their next life in mind.
Founded by the designers Andrea Epifani and Stefania Stamerra, the studio seeks to provoke discussion through its work which includes upcycling and the application of natural and discarded materials. This collection, which consists of three pendant designs, is crafted from a Cradle to Cradle © certified composite material made up of paper waste and a cellulose-based glue. Fully biodegradable in industrial facilities, the pendants take an organic form while having a textured, earthy finish. “The circular mentality is so important to us,” comments Epifani. “In taking a material that dies after one use and allowing it to be reborn through new, and even unexpected forms, is the celebration of life.”
Such developments in the design world are becoming more prevalent as artisans and creatives seek to find alternative solutions that contribute to a greener future for all. Through applying this material to large-scale forms that can be applied within residential or commercial interiors, it allows us to see the scope of such innovation and how the future of design might present, as designers experiment further.
The studio’s wider range consists of tables and chairs as well as interior accessories for the home. Striped patterns featured on tables and mirrors, as well as the diverse assortment of bold hues used within each collection, alludes to the studio’s playful aesthetic for which they are becoming renowned.
For contemporary homes, or even shared workspaces and hybrid offices, these pieces will inject life and joy. And, with the circular values and responsible production methods which have gone into each design, it further enhances the ambience of a space. This is another example of how sustainability does not have to mean a compromise on aesthetic.
