Zaha Hadid, Jean Nouvel and Ross Lovegrove submitted their roles as ‘creator’ to sit for renowned photographer Elliott Erwitt alongside lighting products they designed for Artemide. The photographs and designs will be shown at A Tribute to Light, an exhibition at the Italian Consulate on Farringdon Street during London Design Festival.
Zaha Hadid’s Genesy floor light echoes the flowing, undulating forms of her architecture, and is based on the organic shapes of sweeping tree canopies.
“The lamp’s structure increases in complexity as it rises from the floor,” she said when the light launched in 2009. “Like a growing organism, the central support sprouts branches that adopt a greater radial geometry to enhance the dynamic tensional forces of the structure.
“Nature continues to inform the design as these branches frame voids, enhancing the contrast between positive and negative, convex and concave, tension and compression.
Hadid’s fellow Pritzker Prize winner Jean Nouvel created the tabletop lamp called Objective last year. The seemingly simple form consists of three cylindrical volumes that can be tilted and rotated to create various light sources. Of his various collaborations in other design fields, the French architect has spoken of the temptation to explore “worlds I didn’t know”.
An installation titled Contemporary Masters’ Pieces will also be exhibited at Artemide‘s London showroom. These works were mainly launched this year. Recent additions include David Chipperfield‘s Conica, which recalls the classic lampshade that contains a light beam within a cone shape, and Herzog & de Meuron‘s Unterlinden, a die-cast aluminium or brass hanging light that’s been aged on the outside and is designed to dissipate any heat from the light source.
The exhibitions will run from the 18 to 21 September 2014
