This year, global modular flooring specialist, Interface, has been recognising Beautiful Thinkers. These are ambitious individuals who are championing innovation in all areas of design to push boundaries, from enhancing sustainability and improving wellbeing, to setting fashion trends and helping companies attract new talent.

We asked Laura Light, part of the latest Beautiful Thinkers - the Interface Concept Design team, what she thinks is the essence of beautiful thinking.

“I believe Beautiful Thinking is being able to see the potential in any space, and gathering influences from around the world to develop interior design schemes that impress and engage visitors.

“The Interface Concept Design team supports architects and designers by helping create beautiful, inspiring flooring solutions that meet and exceed the brief. All the support we offer is bespoke to the project needs, which can include the creation of custom colours, products and mood boards to full design support from start to finish, maximising the floor design within an allocated budget.

“We take inspiration from events like Clerkenwell Design Week and art galleries or the natural world to develop flooring schemes for projects of all shapes and sizes. Our aim is to bring an architect or designer’s vision to life, by creating environments perfectly suited to their customer’s culture and values.

“Each project is different with its own unique challenges. Addressing these in an efficient and sympathetic manner is key to creating truly beautiful design.

“Modular flooring can be ideal for meeting these challenges, as it can be used to create completely unique floor designs simply by combining tiles from different collections.

“The shape of the carpet tiles themselves also gives greater design freedom to create bespoke patterns. Interface’s Skinny Plank and square tiles, for example, can be used together in a scheme, offering considerable design flexibility in even the most unusual of spaces.

“Bringing together tiles with different textures can also add variety to a room, such as Interface’s Composure, World Woven and Urban Retreat. Their organic, non-directional weaves can be brought together to create distinctive, yet harmonious flooring concepts.

“Adding bold accent shades to a neutral flooring scheme helps to create a contemporary design. In an open-plan office, zones for specific activities can be defined using blocks of colour, while incorporating a company’s brand colours into the concept can help an organisation stamp its own distinct identity on its workspace.

“This is just a taste of the many creative approaches that can be used to make the most of any interior and achieve ambitious design goals. “That’s what Beautiful Thinking is all about, and that is what we on the Concept Design team do every day, supporting architects and designers with advice and guidance on flooring design which is bespoke to their project requirements.”
