An inviting staircase tumbles down the building, linking staff ‘neighbourhoods’|Plentiful natural light was a key part of a brief that sought to maximise wellbeing|With the soaring staircase above, the ground floor acts as a social plaza for all staff|Settings were designed in response to a overall brief from consultants Veldhoen|Illuminated joinery boxes populate an area of meeting tables|There are no fixed desks or offices, only different settings for individual or group work|In time the facade will teem with greenery from the 520 planters on the curtain wall||

Al Bahr's mechanical apertures respond to sunlight: here, they are shown closed|The openings' shape is inspired by traditional mashrabiya screening|The facade operates as a curtain wall, sitting two metres outside the exterior|Sahmri by Woods Bagot. The small size of each component means that heat and light can be controlled in a more localised way|Each triangular window has a fixed hood, a form inspired by a pinecone|Perforated aluminum panels dress the outside of the Dear Ginza building|The overall effect is one of a sheet of artfully crumpled paper|During the day, the perforated skin casts dappled shadows inside||

The metal facade with "gills" lit by LED bulbs stands out in the busy Broadway area of Sydney|The perforated aluminium panels rest, tilted and skewered, against the building – up to 16 metres away in certain parts|The name of the new department is spelt out in binary code punctured into the facade|The narrow atrium acts as a "crevasse" between the university campus and the southern CBD area|The panels shade the building from the sun and, in doing so, are estimated to bring about a 10 to 15% operational energy saving||
