It’s fair to say Thonet’s bentwood cafe chair is ubiquitous in furniture design. Originally launched in 1859 by Michael Thonet, it used the new technique of bending solid wood to kickstart the serial furniture production industry, and has since been produced in its tens of millions. So it’s notable that after 156 years, Thonet is launching a sofa version.
German designer Christian Werner has adapted its best-known product, using its familiar design language; called 2002, the sofa has a slender frame of solid beech or ash, contrasting with a plump one-piece seat cushion and movable back cushions, available in various finishes.
