The BCO NextGen Awards honour rising stars and employment practices in the workplace industry

The civil engineering firm Elliot Wood Partnership have won the Employer of the Years at the British Council for Offices (BCO)’s NextGen Awards. The company was commended for its “simulating and supportive work environment” and “real commitment to the welfare of its employees.”

The awards celebrate young talent, strong mentorship and good employer practice. They are part of the BCO’s NextGen scheme, which seeks to provide a bridge between generations of practitioners in the workplace indsturies, including architecture, design, engineering and development. “It’s heartening,” said BCO president Katrina Kostic Samen, “to see such a breadth of young talent across the country — individuals who are not just shining in their day to day roles, but making a significant contribution to the broader sector.”

Amanda Whittington of architecture studio Feilden Clegg Bradley (FCB) was nominated Inspirational Leader of the Year, for her mentorship of junior colleagues and forward-thinking approach to new advances in the office sector. Whittington, who joined FCBStudios in 2007 and became a partner in 2016, heads the company’s workplace department. Her projects include the zero-carbon housing development One Brighton and Oxford’s Old Fire Station, an office and cafe for a homeless charity.

Regional Rising Star prizes were handed out to young practioners from a broad range of office sectors. The awardees were Emma Macleod of Hurley Palmer Flatt, Heather Evans of Rider Levett Bucknall, Guy Revell of Bruntwood and Matthew Harley of Arup, with Ryan Dempster of Buckley Grey Yeoman and Laura Hannigan of AKT II sharing the award for London and the South East. Hari John, a graduate surveyor at Cushman & Wakefield and founder of the property networking organisation CREation, was announced as Graduate of the Year.
