Typecasting: Vitra’s new installation for Milan Design Week

Words by

As Milan Design Week 2018 draws closer, Vitra reveals plans for a new installation

During this year’s Milan Design Week, held from 17-22 April 2018, Swiss furniture manufacturer Vitra will present a new installation alongside its stand at Salone del Mobile.

The installation, titled Typecasting, has been described by the company as an “assembly of iconic, forgotten and new Vitra characters”. Held in the former sports arena La Pelota, Brera, it will showcase a panorama of the Vitra archives: current products will sit alongside special editions, prototypes, objects and design studies curated by designer Robert Stadler.

Konstantin Grcic, Barber and Osgerby, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec and Commonplace Studio are among the designers invited to develop ideas for a collective living space, named ‘The Communal Sofa’ – Stadler also contributed a design to the section.

Throughout the exhibition, Stadler aims to question the social function of furniture in today’s modern society and the effects societal changes has on its typologies. “Stadler looks at the objects in this installation outside the context of conventional furniture categories, such as their functional uses or historical origins,” explains Vitra in the exhibition’s press release.

“Instead, he regards them as characters and assigns them to groups that reflect stereotypical behaviour patterns and personality profiles in contemporary society. The regrouping and juxtaposition of individual works also reveals new connections, narrative threads and possible interpretations of ‘Project Vitra’.”

The Vitra Design Museum will also represent its own section at La Pelota, revealing new and upcoming projects. This year the section will focus on new items in the Miniatures Collection, as well as a preview of the project Atlas of Furniture Design – the publication on the history of modern furniture set to release this autumn.
