Los Angeles museum by Arup and Diller Scofidio + Renfo scooped the main prize at last week’s event

A new art museum in Los Angeles by Arup and Diller Scofidio + Renfo was declared the overall winner of the 2017 Surface Design Awards last week.

Founded by philanthropists Eli and Edythe, The Broad is home to 2,000 works of contemporary and post-war art. The two-floor, 120,000 sq ft building on Grand Avenue in the city’s downtown area, designed in collaboration with Gensler, was revealed as the winner last Thursday.

The judges described The Broad as “environmentally and technically great” and an “awe-inspiring space, seamless with a clever use of light and form”. The panel included Tina Nordon of Conran Partners, designers Ab Rogers, Bethan Wood and Afroditi Krassa, as well as representatives of Studiolise and Project Orange.

The awards took place at the annual Surface Design Show in London, which ran from 7 to 9 February and featured 170 exhibitors showing off their exterior and interior surface designs. Particularly visible this year were surfaces that combined both technology and craft, bringing a contemporary twist to traditional materials such as wood and stone.

A seminar programme ran alongside the exhibition. This included a debate on the subject of narrative design, featuring dMFK founding director Julian de Metz, ceramicist Matthew Raw and designer Morag Myerscough, as well as a presentation of the latest and most innovative materials for education and hospitality spaces before they hit the market.
