Capturing Clerkenwell photography competition with Humanscale and Bene

Words by  Photo by Jenny Brewer

Architects from some of the UK’s top practices are taking part in Capturing Clerkenwell, a photography competition hosted by furniture brands Humanscale and Bene, and supported by onoffice. Gensler, Aukett Swanke, tp bennett, MCM, Pringle Brandon Perkins+Will, BDP, Penson, HLW, Spacelab, Aecom, BDG and Edge have all submitted teams.

The competition surrounds the high-profile redevelopment of Smithfield Market, part of which may soon become a new home for the Museum of London. As part of the plans, the historic meat market will remain active, while the Museum of London's ambition is to inhabit the derelict General Market and other buildings. Given the combination of this future cultural landmark (aiming to open in 2021) and Smithfield’s industrial heritage, dating back 800 years, the area makes for a fascinating photographic subject.

For the competition, teams of architects from each participating firm attended a photography masterclass at Humanscale’s Clerkenwell showroom with architectural photographer Edmund Sumner. Onoffice’s Jenny Brewer also gave a talk on the history of the market.

Then, the architects toured Smithfield market early one October morning, while the market was fully in action, and at night when it was closed, both times with cameras in hand to capture its character and history.

The teams have submitted their photos to be judged by a panel including photographer Edmund Sumner, onoffice’s Jenny Brewer and the Museum of London’s Photography Curator, Anna Sparham.

All the photographs will be exhibited at Bene’s Clerkenwell showroom, where the winner will be announced at a private view on 19 November. The prize is a weekend trip to Berlin, and the winning photographs will be featured in an upcoming issue of the onoffice.
