Marking Zeev Aram's 50th anniversary of designing in London, the pioneer of modern furniture design will look back over his career and the changing cultural landscape in a talk at the V&A on 19 September.

Aram has collaborated with architecture and design luminaries, such as Norman Foster and Eileen Gray, and introduced classic pieces by Marcel Breuer, Le Corbusier and A&PG Castiglioni to the UK market. He is well known for his support of up-and-coming designers, including being first to exhibit work by the young Thomas Heatherwick.

Aram moved from Israel to the UK in the 1950s, opening his first furniture store on the King's Road in London, which incurred hate mail from passers-by who thought the designs on display were ridiculous.

"The important thing is that there was a reaction," Aram said of the controversy. "I was afraid people would just walk on by."

The Aram Gallery will also launch Future Stars? during the London Design Festival, an exhibition that showcases the work of seven young designers who are experimenting with different production methods.
