Time for Sleep

Words by

Kelly Hoppen, BDP and The Hickson Design Partnership will create room concepts for this year's Sleep Hotel installation at hospitality design show Sleep. The three contributing practices, plus Purpose Design and Squared Interiors (concept drawing below), will compete against each other, with the winner chosen by Catherine Ince (curator at the Barbican), Anthony Ingham (Starwood Hotels) and Conrad Smith (ReardonSmith architects).

This year's designers have been asked to channel the spirit of the 1960's within to-scale hotel rooms, responding to a brief for the contemporary redesign of a Pop Art-era hotel.

Hoppen will collaborate with bathroom brand Crosswater, BDP will work with with construction firm Sharkey and Squared Interiors with contract furnishings company Dea Contract.

Also taking place during the show is the Sleep Conference, which for the first time is free to attend and entirely CPD credited. Industry guru Ian Schrager headlines the schedule; STR Global’s Kathryn Miller gives an insight to global hotel developments; and Paul Priestman leads a discussion on luxury with representatives from Yoo, HVS and HBA.

Meanwhile there is the main show, where over 150 suppliers across furniture, bathrooms, textiles, technology, flooring and lighting exhibit their latest wares for the hospitality market. Morgan will launch three furniture collections, and bathroom brand Grohe will be launching its Water and Energy Audit, a free service offered to hotels with more than a hundred rooms, assessing their consumption levels.

Sleep takes place at the Business Design Centre, London, from 20-21 November.
