Light and waterproof, a map that you can scrunch into a ball makes the perfect travelling companion
Picked up from a packed pop-up in the Lambrate area of Milan, Palomar’s Crumpled City From The Air map neatly solves the problem of never being able to fold a map back the way it first opened. Designed by PalomarLab and art director Alessandro Maffioletti (aka Alvvino), these soft city maps, available for a range of destinations around the world, are waterproof, durable and, its makers claim, able to open and close in just two seconds.
The black and white satellite photography is tilted to achieve an almost three-dimensional effect for significant buildings and points of interest, an effect that is enhanced when the map is crumpled. Colour is used to highlights the principal routes of the city.
More authentic than using one’s phone and less hassle than its purely paper counterpart, we think this could become a staple at the Salone del Mobile, alongside comfortable shoes and a strong constitution.
