Alki claims 'first bioplastic chair'

Words by

Basque company Alki has launched what it claims is the first chair on the market to be manufactured in bioplastic.

The seat of the Kuskoa Bi chair is made from a plant-based polymer originating from renewable resources such as corn starch, beet and sugarcane.

Developed in-house, the material is fully recyclable and biodegradable (when subjected to an industrial process); it can be injected, extruded and thermoformed just like fossil-fuel plastics.

The design is by serial Alki collaborator Jean Louis Iratzoki, and features a moulded seat supported by a wooden trestle base.
