Thonet debuts Formstelle lounge chair 808

Words by

Munich-based design studio Formstelle has created an ergonomic lounge chair and accompanying footstool for Thonet, which will be launched at imm cologne 2015 alongside a special edition of Ulrich Böhme's rocking chair S 826.

The lounge chair, designed to "embrace the user", plays with the contrast of a protective shell and the soft inner core with integrated springs and "wave-like" upholstery.

The design reinterprets the classic wing chair with an upper backrest that Formstelle describes as "reminiscent of a protective collar". Its shell is made from thermoplastic produced using a rotational-moulding process – an unusual technology for the furniture industry – that results in a hollow and lightweight volume.

Formstelle collaborated with textile manufacturer Rohi to develop a wool yarn with a multidimensional honeycomb structure that adds depth to the fabric. The chair is available in six colours in leather, fabric and formed fleece.

The frame can be made from wood with bentwood elements, flat steel or tubular steel.

Ulrich Böhmeöhme's 1971 rocking chair takes cues from the classic bentwood rocking chair no 1, while its endless loop frame references the tubular-steel designers of the 1920s.

The special edition, which is being reissued as part of the Thonet Collect series, is available in a white fabric by Rohi and a naturally tanned, brown leather. It also features fabric or leather armrest covers and a Casamance cushion.

Just 125 copies of each version will be released.
