Joseph Walsh's sublime, spiralling desk

Words by

Irish furniture designer Joseph Walsh has created an ethereal and sinuous wooden desk that spirals up to the ceiling and coils around the room, coming to rest against the wall as a shelf.

Built as a site specific work for the Artists' House at Roche Court, part of the New Art Centre in Wiltshire, Magnus Celestii is made from delicate, curving layers of ash wood finished with white oil and the desk measures and is the largest piece Walsh's studio has ever created. In this sense, it represents a significant departure for Walsh and marks out a new territory, which the studio is intent on exploring.

The self-taught designer founded his Cork-based studio in 1999, and has said that his work is inspired by his appreciation of nature and, "his desire to engage the user with visual and tactile forms."

Find out more about Walsh and his working methods in this video, created in his workshop and studio in County Cork, Ireland.
