The Ospedale Giovanni XXIII chapel in Bergamo, Italy has been awarded the top prize at the 2015 Surface Design Awards. The building by Traversi + Traversi Architetti and Aymeric Zublena architects won the Public Building Interior Surface category, and then beat the other ten category winners to the Supreme Award.
The interior walls of the contemporary chapel are clad in white concrete panels by Helsinki-based company Graphic Concrete (working with contractor Styl-Comp Group) prebycast with an intricate photographic image (designed by Stefano Arienti) of trees and flowers, inspired by the Garden of Eden. This is punctuated by small circular holes, which allow beams of natural light to penetrate the space, helping create a diffused, serene atmosphere.
