Egypt unveils incredible plans for Capital Park city

Words by

Cairo’s planned administrative capital is a new benchmark for intelligent infrastructure and innovative urban planning

Plans for Capital Park, home to Cairo’s new administrative capital, have just been revealed and they are, to say the least, mightily impressive. The cityscape will be absolutely huge, home to 6.5 million people, living in 21 new districts spread over 23 square kilometres.

Designed by the Beirut-based international project design consultancy Dar, on behalf of the Egyptian government, Capital Park will sit 45km outside of Cairo and is expected to be home to over 180,000 people and to generate 450,000 jobs.

Made up of three different zones, Gateway, Downtown and Central Business District (CBD), the new capital will build up around Central Park, over 10 kilometres in length and four in width, with a Grand Mosque to the west and Africa’s tallest tower to the east.

The CBD will be the first zone to take shape, with Dar already getting site preparation work underway. Set to be an international business and financial hub, the plans envisage the district as populated with gleaming high rises and busy transport systems.

Downtown will be home to museums, galleries, restaurants, bars and shops, while Central Park will be one of the largest urban parks in the world and will include botanical gardens, major event spaces and a series of art features and installations.

Egypt’s Prime Minister, Mostafa Madbouly, said: ‘The vision is a new, world class city reflective of the rich heritage of Egypt, whilst delivering a higher quality of life for existing and future generations.’
