"Planners are traffic wardens of town planning"

Terry Farrell has described planners as “the traffic wardens of the built environment” due to their restrictive approach to town planning in the UK.

Local authorities need to be more flexible and accepting of ‘standardised construction methods’ if they are to deal with the £120bn public sector and infrastructure projects in the pipeline, he said.

Farrell was discussing the issue as part of the advisory panel for the inaugural UK Construction Week in October. The panel also discussed the need to attract more young people to the construction industry to address future skill shortages.
