Uber hails new workplace of 'neighbourhoods'

Words by

SHoP architects and Studio O+A have revealed designs for taxi company Uber’s new San Francisco headquarters. The 39,297sq m proposed scheme features two glass buildings – one 11-storey and another six-storey – joined by three semi-enclosed glass and steel bridges.

As part of an effort to support the surrounding urban environment, a public plaza will exist underneath the bridges, and the mixed-use scheme will include ground-floor retail units.

The workplace interior, “marks a departure from the growing trend of an entirely open-plan office,” says New York-based SHoP. Workstations will be arranged as a series of small neighbourhoods, each with access to street-facing shared space.
