Winners of 'Olympicopolis' announced

Architects O’Donnell Tuomey are part of the team, along with Allies and Morrison, that has won a competition to design the Stratford Waterfront, a key part of the Olympicopolis scheme.

Other firms that were involved in the successful bid include Josep Camps/Olga Felip Architecturia, Buro Happold, Gustafson Porter and Gardiner and Theobold. With a quarter of a century’s worth of experience in designing for the public realm, O’Donnell Tuomey say they feel like this commission is one they have been aiming towards for a long time. ’

The145,000 sq m cultural and education quarter on the Queen Elizabeth Park in East London will include a clutch of new buildings for well-known institutions. University College London (UCL) will create a new university campus near Anish Kapoor’s Orbit while the University of the Arts London will have another campus opposite Zaha Hadid’s Aquatics Centre.

The scheme will also provide new buildings for the Victoria and Albert Museum and Sadler’s Wells. Upon pledging £141 million at the end of last year for the Olympicopolis, Mayor of London Boris Johnson said this project represented an important milestone in the legacy of the 2012 Games.

The winners of the Stratford Waterfront scheme saw off competition from a shortlist featuring teams featuring the likes of AECOM, David Chipperfield and Feilden Clegg Bradley.
