Wilkinson Eyre submits plans for Leadenhall tower

Words by

Wilkinson Eyre’s design for a 40-storey tower next to the Cheesegrater has been submitted for planning.

The 71,500sq m scheme will stand on the corner of Bishopsgate and Leadenhall Street, close to Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners’ Leadenhall Building, the design comprising a series of stacked blocks. These cuboid volumes will decrease in size towards the top of the tower, producing a tapering form that responds to its urban context, says the architect.

Each block will have differing levels of transparency, and the staggered shape will create a series of rooftop terraces. Mitsubishi Estate, the client, says the building will be mostly dedicated to offices, with retail units on the ground and mezzanine floors and a public viewing gallery at level 40.

It is aiming for a BREEAM Excellent rating and completion in 2020.
