Geometric roof pavilion for Aldwych House

Words by

London-based architect Sheppard Robson has won planning for a pavilion-like structure on the roof of Aldwych House, which will add almost 800sq m of office space.

The £15m extension is composed of a series of geometrical folded forms that are designed to fit with neighbouring rooflines and reflect the classical proportions of the building's main facade. It will be clad in zinc and its windows will be lined up to optimise views over the Southbank and the City.

Real-estate business Rowan borrowed £78m to renovate the ten-storey building, which is one of the largest in the Westminster area. To date, the reception area, entrance hall, balconies and the atrium have been completed. The roof extension forms the second stage of the project, along with the refurbishment of the existing office space.
