The London-office of SOM and Danish studio Entasis have won a contest for Sweden's tallest building, seeing off four finalists, including fellow Brits Zaha Hadid and Ian Simpson.

The 230m, mixed-use tower in Gothenburg forms part of a 140,000sq m masterplan for the post-industrial business district north of Götaälven. When completed, it will be over double the height of the Gothia New Tower, which is currently city's tallest building.

Inspired by "ribbons blowing in the wind", the Poleststar Tower will comprise a residential tower, surrounded by a cluster of mid-rise buildings and several mixed-use podium blocks. It will also include a public restaurant, a gym, a residents' lounge, a podium-level garden and a rooftop observation deck.

Other finalists included Manuelle Gautrand Architecture of France and local firm Wingårdh arkitektkontor. And more than 50 firms entered the contest.
