Glenn Howells architects scooped the double honours at this year’s BCO awards winning Best Commercial Workplace and the Best of the Best award for Eleven Brindleyplace, Birmingham. The building is one of the first BREEAM Excellent in the city and features a planted roof for wildlife and brise soleil shading. Also in the winners enclosure for best refurbished/recycled workplace was the Fairhursts Design Group who designed and fitted out Broadgate in Leeds, a former department store. Global giants BDP nailed best fit-out for PricewaterhouseCoopers in Glasgow while Artillery Architecture’s Graeae Theatre captured best project up to 2000 sq m. The innovation award went to Building Design Partnership’s West Lothian Civic Centre and there was another award for Dixon Jones and TP Bennett’s Guardian News and Media HQ, Kings Place this time for best corporate workplace. Despite the success of buildings in the regions a recent survey of BCO members showed that over three quarters believe that public sector cuts could slow regional recovery and two thirds say it could have a negative effect on innovation.
