Polish designer Magdalena Tekieli has created a desk that hides secret compartments in bellows beneath the desktop, which are revealed by turning a wooden crank. Secret Desk uses a mechanism similar to a Jack-in-a-Box whereby turning a handle on the side of the desk slowly lowers the collection of small drawers into the bellows to be stored away, the top becoming flush with the tabletop. When in use, the drawers can be raised up to sit on the desktop, and there’s even more secret storage underneath the desk surface. The piece is beautifully made in oak with brass legs and a leather top and bellows, but it’s the video and not the pictures that do it justice. TEX glass is a laminated glass product from Glassolutions, with a wide range of beautiful fabrics from the Nya Nordiska collection encapsulated inside. The product can be used to create dramatic features in interior applications such as partitions, screens, doors and furniture, especially when combined with either back-painted or mirrored glass. Because the fabric is encased by glass, it is both well protected and easy to clean.
The inspiration for the Bar stool addition to Gaga & Design’s woven furniture collection was the classic tractor seat, which evolved into a functional, urban bar stool. Designer Neil Nenner has created the Bar stool for use either at home or for intimate cafés and bistros. All the woven furniture is made from zinc-plated and powder-coated steel tubing and is hand woven with synthetic fibres. The stool sits at a height of 65-74cm, with 44cm width x 45cm depth.
The Punti bench is a new addition to the woven furniture collection from Israeli design studio Gaga & Design. The asymmetrical bench comfortably seats three and is inspired by colour dripping from a painter’s pallet. As the outer rings are coiled before the seating surface, Gaga & Design offer an opportunity for varied colour matching on the clients request. The Punti bench is 45cm high and can be specified at a maximum 150 x 72cm.
Sam Weller Design unveils new furniture range Holdfast, available for the first time at Designersblock. Designed by London Royal College of Art graduate Sam Weller, Holdfast began with the exploration of clamps and their infinite possibilities as both a tool and a joining device. The clamp elements that hold the furniture together are very simple in form and were based on the holdfast clamping system typically used for holding material to a workbench surface.
Morgan, the design-led British manufacturer of contract furniture, recently exhibited at Clerkenwell Design Week, and launched additions to its bold and contemporary Metro and Oslo collections. The company also showed Manhattan, a modular seating system consisting of three main elements: screen, plinth and seat modules; with either low or high backs. The system allows a variety of configurations incorporating chairs, sofas, benches and seating booths.
The maryjane chairs from Horizon Furniture were recently showed at Tent London as part of Design Island. Established in 2008 and the brainchild of designer/maker Fergal O’Leary, Horizon Furniture produce quality designed, handmade furniture, and are now concentrating on designing imaginative and intuitive furniture products for domestic, UK and European markets. A close knit team of three makers prototype, develop and manufacture Fergal’s designs, adhering to his belief in cool, calm, collectable and simple yet bold design.
The Zenith range of wood veneer office furniture from Eborcraft offers the opportunity to inlay contrasting veneers in eye-catching shapes. For a co-ordinated appearance, the inlaid veneers can be incorporated into every item in the Zenith range, including desks, workstations, storage units, meeting tables and tilt-top tables. A distinctive feature of Eborcraft's new Zenith range is a "floating" top. This effect has been achieved by placing the tabletop on a recessed support that is fixed to the base.
The Maineseries31 cupboards by Maine were specified for the offices of a major, international law firm in London. The law firm’s new offices span two floors of the recently completed Heron Tower, designed by John Pederson Fox. KKS Strategy’s elegant design for the interior is also reflected in their specification of Maine’s cupboards in pure white, with classic handle details.
Eborcraft’s latest project is a conference table with an unusual V-shaped design. Inspired by the client’s requirement to accommodate up to 15 individuals for audio-visual presentations, with each attendee having an unobstructed view, the V-shaped table was created from Eborcraft’s Oracle collection of wood veneer boardroom furniture with its discreetly incorporated wire management system. The bespoke V-shaped table is 5.4 metres long and 3.5 metres wide, veneered in American black walnut with a cross-banded oak trim along the inner edge, giving it a distinctive design.
